Talent Orientation Camp a Huge Success
Sport Northern Ireland’s second Talent Orientation Camp held from 5-7 August at the University of Ulster was a huge success. It provided a unique opportunity for 17 young athletes to receive an insight into the world of high performance sport and to critically reflect upon their own talent, ability and potential to succeed at the highest level.

Michael Carruth with the athletes
One of the highlights of the camp was a visit by Michael Carruth, the 1992 Olympic Welterweight Champion who gave participants an insight into what it was like to compete at Olympic level. The athletes heard how Michael managed to juggle his education and training and the sacrifices he had to make along the way to become an Olympic Champion.
The young athletes experienced an intense programme of workshops and practical sessions on talent and ability, attitude and ambition, knowledge and understanding, education and lifestyle, and physical training. They were challenged to think and behave like an elite performer throughout the camp and to then integrate this thinking into their future sporting career.
The Talent Orientation Camp which was delivered by staff from the Sports Institute Northern Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland and the specific governing bodies was hailed a success by participants, their coaches, their parents/carers, and the sports involved.
