Sports Awards Puts ‘Best’ Foot Forward
The countdown is underway for this year’s Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards and Ulster captain and Irish international Rory Best helped launch the awards which will be held at the Ramada Hotel on 21st January 2008.
Northern Ireland has lots of fantastic sporting heroes, both young and old, making their name at home and abroad and the annual Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards aim to honour these players, teams, managers and some of those unsung heroes working behind the scenes.
2006 award winners included Darren Clarke, Andrew Trimble, Jonny Evans, Jonathan Rea, the Ulster U16 Girls’ Hockey Squad, David Jeffrey and squash player Madeline Perry.

Individual category awards include Team and Player of the Year sponsored by Club Energise and Pepsi, Manager/Coach of the Year backed by O’Neills, Young Team of the Year sponsored by Peugeot, Young Player of the Year and the Hall of Fame Award. Other award categories include Local Heroes supported by Sport Northern Ireland, Sports Person with a Disability, backed by Disability Needs and the WJ ‘Paddy’ Patterson Award sponsored by the Northern Ireland Sports Forum. The George Best Belfast City Airport will also sponsor the George Best Breakthrough Award and Magners will lend its name to the top award, the Northern Ireland Sports Star of the Year.
Nominations can be made by organisations, governing bodies of sport, district councils, local sports councils and individuals. Each nomination should include a citation of not more than 200 words and should include the nomination person/organisation’s name, address and telephone number and should arrive not later than 12 noon on Monday 3rd December.
