Local Talent Honoured at Belfast Telegraph Sport Awards
It was a night of success and glory for local sporting talent on Monday (21 January) when the Belfast Telegraph Awards took place in the Ramada Hotel. There was stiff competition for each of the 12 categories:
Footballer David Healy was crowned the 2007 Belfast Telegraph Sports Star of the Year; becoming the first sportsperson to claim the award for a third time.
Barry McGuigan, the former World featherweight champion took the Hall of Fame Award.

Blind water skier Janet Gray who is funded by Sport Northern Ireland was rewarded for her inspiring devotion to her sport when she lifted the Sports Person of the Year with a Disability award.
Sport Northern Ireland funded swimmer Conor Leaney was crowned Young Player of the Year.
Rory McIlroy became the first non-footballer to win the George Best Breakthrough award.
The Royal School Armagh Girls’ Hockey who won the All Ireland School’s Championships and Ulster Schools’ Cup last year took home the Young Team of the Year award.

Linfield football player Glenn Ferguson won the Player of the Year Award.
The Manager / Coach of the Year Award went to Donal Murtagh, the manager of Crossmaglen Rangers whose team won the Ulster and All-Ireland titles in 2007.
The Northern Ireland football team picked up the Team of the Year award.
Sixteen year old Natalie Kane the current British Women’s Motocross Champion received the Local Heroes Award.

The special award went to John McKeag. John has dedicated over 60 years of his life to athletics and at 85 years of age is still participating.
Ireland’s cricket manager, Roy Torrens won the WJ Paddy Patterson Award which recognises long and distinguished service as a volunteer in sport.
