Past runher events
On 29 June 2008, 690 women walked, jogged and ran the Belfast Telegraph Runher 8k - in association with Up and Running NI. The previous year, Up and Running's Michael Jenkins and 2006 Irish Marathon champion, Jill Shannon tested the water with their debut event the Women’s 5k. 220 girls ran the inaugural event which was pitched at women of all fitness levels. Something special was 'born' that day in Northern Ireland running. Press coverage was immense with BBC, UTV and the Belfast Telegraph all giving the event plenty of local coverage.
The Belfast Telegraph became title sponsor in 2008 of the newly titled 'Belfast Telegraph Runher 5k'. Together with Up and Running NI - the Telegraph gave womens' fitness a whole new platform. The paper, in the lead up to June's 5k and again for the upcoming 8k, features stories on women of all abilities on their personal stories of fitness and their personal quest to run the distance - with their friends, family, daughters, mums and girls alike. Training plans, on hand running experts and a back up online talkback forum have been the norm.
Clic Sargent has worked diligently as the main charity partner while US shoe brand, Brooks Running, provide on the day support. Runher is an event with a difference - this is no ordinary event. At the 5k, there was a jazz band, DJ, pre-race warm up with Jill Shannon, Free £15 event tech tee for the first 500 entries, tea/coffee and buns at prize-giving and spot prizes - no matter where you finish. The last girl home (Katrina) probably got a bigger cheer home than the first (Roberta). It's not where you finish- it's about taking part, getting girls fitter and being part of something special.
