Judo Continue Trend for Equality
The Northern Ireland Judo Federation has been awarded the Foundation Level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport.
The Federation worked in conjunction with their parent body, the British Judo Association and the other home country governing bodies, Judo Scotland and the Welsh Judo Association to achieve the award.
They are only the fourth governing body in Northern Ireland to be awarded the Foundation level.
The ultimate aim of the equality standard is to get more people from under-represented or disadvantaged groups in society involved in sporting activity at all levels. The standard focuses in particular on eliminating barriers currently faced by groups including women and girls, those from minority ethic backgrounds and those with disabilities.
The aims of the Equality Standard support the overall strategic vision of Sport Northern Ireland:
“Through sport, to contribute to an inclusive, creative, competent, informed and vibrant community”.
Professor Eric Saunders OBE, commented,
“Congratulations to the Northern Ireland Judo Federation. We know that many people face discrimination and barriers to participation in sport. If we can break down these barriers and ensure everyone enjoys equal opportunities to take part in sport, we will see an increase in participation, volunteers, coaches, administrators, officials, club member and spectators across sport at all levels.”
This is a significant achievement and clearly demonstrates Judo’s commitment to providing opportunities for all members of our community, regardless of their background or ability. |
