Lowry takes maiden Sunflower win

SINI and Sport Northern Ireland funded athlete, Ian Lowry, won the Sunflower Trophy for the first time on board his Relentless TAS Suzuki at Bishopscourt on Sunday.

Portadown's Marshall Neill was second, with Dubliner Jack Kennedy third and five-time winner Michael Laverty fourth on another Relentless Suzuki.

Moira man Lowry had set the pole position time in qualifying but John Laverty was ruled out after suffering a fractured collarbone in practice.

Lowry won the opening Irish Superbike race of the day, with Seeley second and Neill third while in race two, Seeley came home first from Michael Laverty, with Neill again third.  Ian Lowry was fifth in this year's British Superbike series, his first season in the competition.

After 12 laps around Bishopscourt, the Moira man was not only crowned Sunflower champion 2009, but also confirmed himself as Ireland’s number one Superbike rider.

An emotional Lowry said: “We have had a great year and I’m just glad everything worked well today for me.

“I got a good start, led from the front and watched my boards. There were no major mishaps and we just kept it smooth. I’ve been waiting on this for three years.”
