Sport Northern Ireland funded athletes Ben Reid and Conor McConvey are both riding on a high after achieving great results at the World Mountain Bike Championships which took place in Fort William, Scotland at the weekend.
Conor who has just recently began to race competitively in the under 23 Category of the sport came 21st in the Cross Country Olympic rankings. As Conor is only 18, he was one of the youngest senior riders in the UCIs top 150 riders and he was the youngest rider to finish in the highest rankings. 21st is a great achievement for Conor who has another five years left in this category to build further on his great ranking.
Newtownard’s Ben Reid also achieved a great result, coming 14th in the Downhill division. Ben is Northern Ireland and Ireland's top downhill mountain biker and is currently number one in Ulster and Ireland, number 4 in Britain, number 6 in Europe and number 14 in the World. He is the highest ranked Irish rider since the days of Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche.
Professor Eric Saunders OBE, Chairman of Sport Northern Ireland who met with both Conor and Ben prior to the World Championships to wish them both well spoke of their achievement.
“On behalf of Sport Northern Ireland I would like to congratulate both Conor and Ben on their excellent results at the weekend. They are both excellent sporting role models to inspire and motivate other young people”.
