Northern Ireland Fencers Enjoy Success at the Recent World Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships
Sports Council-funded fencer, Andrew Fenwick (20), recently competed at the World Junior Championships, Turkey, at which he finished in 11th place.
A total of 133 competitors from 53 different countries competed at this event.
Andrew, who competes in the Epee discipline, successfully won all his fights in the first round, and was seeded 8th as he entered the Direct Elimination phase.
As a result of this, Andrew got a bye through to the last 128 where he defeated Canadian Igor Gantsevich, 15/12 in the last 64, and Poland’s current European Junior Champion Piotr Nemec 15/9 in the last 32 before being eventually beaten by Pavel Sukhov from Russia in the quarter-final stage.
Andrew’s success at the World Championships moves him up to 36th on the World Junior ranking list.
In addition to this, Grace O’Connell who also fences for Northern Ireland competed in the Ladies Cadet Sabre event and finished in 16th place overall. |
