Promising athletes experience Talent Orientation Camp...

Seventeen of Northern Ireland’s most talented young athletes in five sports will discover what it takes to succeed at Sport Northern Ireland’s second Talent Orientation Camp being hosted at the University of Ulster from 5-7 August.

The three-day residential will prepare the athletes for the many personal, sporting, academic and vocational challenges that lie ahead. It will be an opportunity for the participants to gain valuable knowledge from successful performers, High Performance Managers and Performance Lifestyle Coaches from the world of performance sport.

Michael Carruth, the 1992 Olympic Welterweight Champion will give the participants an insight into what it is like to compete at Olympic level, how he managed to juggle education and training and the sacrifices he had to make along the way to become an Olympic Champion.

In addition the camp with its multi-sport aspect will provide a unique chance for the exchange of theory and practice between coaches. Athletes’ parents/carers will also benefit from the event as they will be invited to attend on the final day to access a snapshot of the camp and learn ways in which they can help the young people in making future life choices and supporting them in their sporting and education careers.

Dominic Walsh, Chair of Sport Northern Ireland said,

“Sport Northern Ireland is delighted to afford this great opportunity to these talented athletes, their parents/carers and their coaches. Over the duration of this event, the young participants will undertake a range of challenges and exercises that will aid them in making key decisions as they approach an important transition stage in their sporting career.”

Notes to editors:

The athletes have been selected by their national governing bodies of badminton, cycling, hockey, boxing and squash.
