ARE LOCAL HOPEFULS IN OUR ULSTER INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR TENNIS TOURNAMENT

This annual Belfast City Council Ulster Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament now in its tenth year of existence,  has become one of the most popular competitions on the wheelchair tennis  circuit.

The event hosted by the local ‘Spokes In Motion’ Wheelchair Tennis Club in association with Belfast City Council and Tennis Ireland, again held at The Belfast Indoor Tennis Arena,  28th - 30th September, has attracted top players from England,  Scotland,  Wales and Ireland all hoping to take the top prize from the defending 2006 champion English man David Phillipson.

The event organisers are delighted with the high standard of the players coming to do battle for the silverware and are especially pleased that attending the tournament will be the president of the International Wheelchair Tennis Association Mr Martin McElhatton and also for the first time Dutch number 1 quad player Bas Van Erp, who will indeed be amongst the favourites to lift the top prize.

Our local hopefuls in the top division are Newtownabbey man Stafford Lynn and Glenavy`s Ivor Jess, both who find themselves in a very competitive side of the draw.

We are also thrilled that Olympian Ade Adepitan MBE (the face of the BBC wheelchair dancing trailer) will this year for the first time be competing in our event.  Also included in the line up of top players is Scotland’s ‘Pistol` Pete Moore who is the only player from across the water to attend all ten of the Belfast International tournaments.

From the impressive line up of competitors attending our home tournament this year,  organisers are expecting a very high standard of wheelchair tennis,  with some hard fought three set thrillers. The high level of competition will prove valuable preparation for our local players involved in other forthcoming International Tournaments.

The ’Spokes In Motion’ Club along with Tennis Ireland also use the event to promote and develop this fast and exciting sport, within Northern Ireland.

The tournament committee are delighted and extremely grateful to Belfast City Council for once again hosting the Tournament Banquet in the Spectacular Belfast City Hall setting,  and also to Sport Northern Ireland,  Evian, and the Freewheelers organisation,  for without their valued support it would not be possible to host this now established and well presented event.
