Research on the future of adventure activitiesed for long service
Key players in the provision of adventure activities in Northern Ireland met in late January at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre and the Belfast Activity Centre to discuss possibilities for the future accreditation of activities such as trekking, climbing, canoeing and sailing.
The Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and the Sports Council for Northern Ireland (SCNI) have commissioned consultants Adventure Activity Associates Ltd. to look at both statutory and non-statutory options for accreditation aimed at supporting high standards of safety and quality in adventure activity provision by educational bodies, voluntary organisations and commercial providers.
Adventure Activity Associates Ltd. have recently reported on research in Great Britain into non-statutory options for accreditation of this kind and have now been asked to examine similar possibilities in Northern Ireland. This Research project ends in April 2007.
Nick Harkness of SCNI said “This is a great opportunity for us to develop arrangements that will work for both providers and consumers”
