Sport NI Annual Review 2006/07
Sport Northern Ireland is pleased to introduce the Annual Review 2006/07.
For all those engaged in sport and physical recreation, at any level, its value is
self-evident. Sport and physical recreation, is a pervasive cultural force in Northern Ireland and is instrumental in improving people’s quality of life. There is a growing awareness of the significant contribution that sport and physical recreation can make to improve society in terms of health, social inclusion, neighbourhood renewal, Northern Ireland’s image at home and abroad, and the economy.

Many grass roots sports clubs now have the facilities and equipment in place to increase participation in sport and physical recreation, particularly among young people, women and people with disabilities. They can now also increase awareness of the importance of being active and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle; develop programmes aimed at bringing the community together through sport; be proactive in terms of coaching initiatives; and strive to enhance team sports competitively.
Sport Northern Ireland has also afforded many individual elite athletes the opportunity to further develop their sporting potential; allowing better training conditions, the opportunity to be coached by experts, and compete nationally and internationally. Our local athletes continue to make headlines all around the world with their stories of improved ranking levels and podium success.
Sport Northern Ireland also continue to play a strategic role in biding, securing and staging major events. The extremely successful World Women’s Squash Championships, which we supported with our partners Belfast City Council, gave us the opportunity to showcase our ability to host a major sporting event and promote Northern Ireland as a world-class destination.
Sport Northern Ireland hopes you enjoy the Annual Review of sporting highlights and achievements, which we trust you will find insightful, energising and inspiring.
