Elite Facilities Programme

for

Northern Ireland Olympic/Paralympic Sports

 

The Olympic & Paralympic Games in London 2012 will, among other things, act as a catalyst for the development of sport in the UK.

As part of the wider Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland, approximately £53 million has been provisionally allocated for investment in elite facilities for Olympic/Paralympic Sports.

Sport Northern Ireland is managing this programme and an initial competition for the 50 metre swimming pool facility has already been initiated with stage one decisions announced, and stage two outline business cases submitted by the two application organisations.

Sport Northern Ireland has invited stage one applications for other elite facilities, relating to the following sports:

Athletics Hockey
Badminton Judo
Basketball Taekwondo
Boxing Rowing
Canoeing Sailing
Cycling (Mountain Biking) Shooting
Cycling (Road) Table Tennis
Cycling (Track) Tennis
Equestrian Volleyball
Fencing Weightlifting
Gymnastics  

Applications were welcomed from the following:

  • Public Bodies
  • Private Sector
  • Governing Bodies for sport
  • Sports Clubs
  • Community based organisation

Any facility developed must comply, where appropriate, with the requirements for paralympic sports.

The competition can provide up to 75% of the capital costs.  A minimum of 25% of costs must be found from an alternative source such as private investment, a local authority or the governing body.
