Officially opened in April 2013, mountain bike trail development involved the construction of a mountain bike trail system comprising three mountain bike trails and a jump park.
This development meets strict construction standards and guidelines to ensure a quality experience for users.
The project was delivered in partnership with Belfast City Council and Lagan Rural Partnership (Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme). Sport Northern Ireland contributed £225,338 towards the project.
The ‘free’ facility has proven to be extremely popular with 131,159 recorded visits to date. It is a unique facility to Northern Ireland both in terms of its urban setting and dirt jump facility which has attracted over 20,000 visits on its own.
The facility also provides an additional training venue in Northern Ireland for athletes involved in all disciplines of cycling. Cycling Ulster was consulted at trail design stage and has committed to running Development Squad Training sessions and Competitive Events at the venue.
Wallace High School officially opened their new floodlit sand dressed hockey pitch in June 2014. Sport Northern Ireland contributed £245,000 towards the project.
The local community and generations of children within the locality will undoubtedly benefit from this high quality facility in the future. ‘Wallace’ intends to work with various partners, including Ulster Hockey, to develop and facilitate extensive sports development programmes for all age groups and abilities. Alongside curricular and afterschool sport, Wallace has also appointed a facility manager to optimise the use of the facility by the community outside school hours.
This project is the crowning achievement in a particularly remarkable year for Wallace High School. In terms of hockey, the boys team have had a very successful season, celebrating winning The McCullough Cup, The Ulster Hockey’s Burney Cup and The Richardson Cup.
