Irish Bowl to Glory..
The 11th World Bowls Championships which took place in Christchurch, New Zealandfrom 12-27 January were quite a success for Ireland. The women’s team took two medals with a bronze in the pair’s event for Bernie O’Neill and Margaret Johnston and a bronze in the fours event for Bernie O'Neill, Alison Bell, Donna McNally and Jennifer Dowds.
The men’s team just missed out on medals in the triples and fours events, ranking fifth in each.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are supported through the Sport Northern Ireland Lottery Funded Athlete Support Programme which helped them with their preparation and training programme prior to the World Championships. This funding also enabled them to attend a pre-world competition training camp in New Zealand prior to competing which helped the players acclimatise and prepare before competing in New Zealand.

Speaking on this great result, Nick Harkness, Acting Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland commented: “This is an excellent result for Ireland. I would like to congratulate these team members and indeed the rest of the team on their great success. They are great ambassadors for Ireland and have done us extremely proud.”
