Gold for Karla at Deeside

Karla Quinn who has been making the headlines recently has just put ice skating back in the limelight once more... Karla who has been Sport Northern Ireland Lottery funded since April 07, has just achieved her long-term goal of qualification for the British Senior Ladies Championships a year sooner than anticipated!

The young Rasharkin lass who has already qualified for the British Junior Ladies and recently represented GB at the Junior Grand Prix event in Sheffield, put in two personal best performances in the WISA Championships at Deeside on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 November to skate her way to the senior finals in January 2008.  Karla who becomes only the second female skater from Ireland to ever to qualify for the Senior Ladies event under the new marking system was delighted with her performance:

'To win the gold medal in my first ISU Senior Qualifier for over 14 months was great but to qualify for the Senior Ladies was a dream literally come true, I have worked really hard to get in shape over the last seven months and to perfect my jumping techniques and technical element scores - it has all paid off and I was ready for it!'

Karla has been with coach and mentor Margaret O'Neill since the age of six and Margaret also from Northern Ireland originally but now based in Sheffield commented:

'This was by far Karla's best skate - she has even more to come out but her performance was truly that of a Senior skater and we will decide nearer the time whether to compete at Junior Level or Senior in January.'

AKR Promotions Karin Rowlands who manages Karla's PR stated:

'We are absolutely thrilled for Karla the funding that the Lottery has given for her this year has helped enormously without it she could not have achieved her interim goals and ultimately this goal without it, this also gave her the confidence to know that people still believed in her and were prepared to invest in her future.  The Quinn family are delighted and very proud of Karla's achievements and would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all who have supported her this year, she is certainly living up to her most recent title of 'Sportswoman of the Year!' This latest gold medal and qualification is definitely the icing on the cake and endorses the views of all those who have invested in Karla's future'

The young Rasharkin lass will be home for a few days to celebrate however the hard work and training will again begin for the British Championships in January...keep up to date with all of Karla's news on www.karlaquinn.com
