Sport NI Chairman, George Lucas, is a force to be reckoned with at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games!

The Chairman has been proactively engaged in discussing Northern Ireland’s sporting need with key senior personnel from across the Commonwealth sporting network as well as providing support and encouragement to Team NI athletes, coaches and Sport NI staff at the Gold Coast.

Sport NI is committed to developing performance sport under the Sporting Winners programme, demonstrating the significant contribution which sports and athletes make to NI society. Sports Institute staff are providing continuous specialist support to Team NI at the Games including physiology, performance analysis and nutrition.

One discussion the Sport NI Chairman had was with New Zealand High Performance Director, Michael Team (pictured below). New Zealand has achieved significant success by a joined up strategy of focusing resources on medal winning potential athletes, ensuring early talent identification, a clear pathway and ongoing technical support, expertise and financial resources over a sustained period. This produces role models, encourages increased pride in the country and participation in sport and is good learning to bring back to Northern Ireland for a wider discussion.
