Lough Erne and Lough Foyle have played host to a pair of flotilla events this month in a celebration of watersports to mark the 2016 European Week of Sport.
The flotillas were organised Sport Northern Ireland in partnership with Waterways Ireland, the Loughs Agency, and other European partners. Taking place on Saturday 10th and Saturday 17th September, the events saw hundreds of local watersports enthusiasts and clubs sail, paddle, row and float down 7km route along the two loughs.
The flotilla events were the latest in a range of initiatives supported by Sport Northern Ireland as part of its ‘get wet’ project, which has seen a series of watersports activities and taster opportunities organised across Northern Ireland. The project has been co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, with many of those involved making up the two flotillas.
Commenting on the events, Sport Northern Ireland’s Outdoor Recreation Development Officer, Mike McClure said:
“The message of European Week of Sport is to ‘be active’ and these events were about showcasing the potential watersports have in promoting health and physical activity through sport. The flotillas have demonstrated the diverse range of sports available on the water, be it sailing, canoeing or paddleboarding, and the fantastic outdoor places we have here in Northern Ireland. Sport NI is delighted to have been working with our partners, both locally and across Europe, on this event and throughout the ‘get wet’ project – we look forward to continuing to work with them to develop watersports and outdoor sport.”
