Sport Matters: The Northern Ireland Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation 2009-19 aspires to have 100 athletes from Northern Ireland attaining medal success at the highest level in their sport. This particular target has been set to challenge athletes, coaches, governing bodies of sport and others within the athlete development system to ‘step up’ and deliver medal success on the world stage.

In monitoring this target, the Sport Matters Implementation Group for Performance has collated a list of athletes who have achieved medal success at the highest levels of their sport including World, European, Olympic/Paralympic and Commonwealth level. Download list of athletes (PDF 91.6KB)

The Sport Matters Strategy – its Vision, Targets and outcomes – belongs to ‘sport’ in the widest sense. We would like you to screen the attached list and get in contact if you can identify any athlete or team from Northern Ireland who has achieved medal success at the highest level within their sport that has not been included. While we would like to focus on senior athletes, we would also be interested in recording details of medal winning junior athletes. Should you have any information to add to the list please forward these tojamieuprichard@sportni.net. Information should include:

  • Name of the Athlete
  • Sport/Discipline
  • Date of medal success
  • Level (Junior/Senior)
  • Competition (including level – World, European, Olympic/Paralympic, and Commonwealth)
  • Type of Medal
