Double Paralympic Gold Medallist and Sport NI’s Sporting Ambassador Michael McKillop has teamed up with local school children and staff from the Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) to celebrate Kelly Gallagher’s Paralympic Gold success.

Kelly, who is also a Sport NI Sporting Ambassador, made history on Monday (10 March) after winning Golf in the Super-G event – Great Britain and NI’s first ever Winter Paralympic Gold medal.

Visiting SINI, school children from Jordanstown School took part in a Q&A with Michael McKillop on Tuesday morning (11 March), where they asked questions about Kelly’s training and her inspirational role as an athlete.

Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland, Antoinette McKeown, said: “It is fantastic that our Sporting Ambassador Michael McKillop and local school children have had an opportunity to come together this morning to celebrate Kelly’s success and to cheer her on! As a Sport Northern Ireland Sporting Ambassador, Kelly is an absolute inspiration to us all.

“This Gold medal is a fantastic achievement for Kelly and our Sports Institute. Kelly’s passion for her sport and dedication as an athlete has seen a number of successes recently and we are all behind her, particularly for her remaining events at Sochi.”

Kelly is supported by Sport Northern Ireland, working closely with Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) where she has received support for the last five years. Kelly bases herself at SINI for part of the year and works with various SINI practitioners including Strength and Conditioning, Sports Medicine, Physiology and the Planning unit. When Kelly is competing or at training events SINI physiotherapists and Performance Skills coach will often travel with her to support her.
