About Sport in Our Community

In response to identified and ongoing need within the sports community, Sport Northern Ireland developed Sport in Our Community investment programme. £3.6 million was invested in 34 projects from the voluntary, community and statutory sectors and aimed to deliver innovative and creative projects over a four year period (2006-2010).

Successful applications to the programme demonstrated that their project met at least one of the following three cross-cutting themes:

  • Development and improvement of physical literacy;
  • Development of opportunities for people with disabilities; and/or
  • Creation of sport or physical activity in areas of high social need for those who have not previously had a sustained interest in sport or physical activity.

A total of 36,814 participants were reported 2008-09, this included:

  • 1,879 disabled people, an increase of 48% on figures reported 2007-08;
  • 15,354 women and girls, an increase of 41% of figures reported 2007-08;
  • 2,132 older people, an increase of 123% on figures reported 2007-08; and
  • 590 members of minority ethnic communities, an increase of 92% on figures reported 2007-08.

In addition a significant increase was reported in projects delivering Health Referral programmes using sport and physical recreation as a primary health tool.
