Sport Northern Ireland Investment Conference
2 October 2008

Paralympic Gold medallists Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop, Olympic Bronze Medallist Paddy Barnes, and Tyrone Gaelic Footballers Joe McMahon and Ryan Mellon joined Sport Northern Ireland (SNI) today as it set a target of getting 100,000 individuals participating in sport as part of its new £14.5m ‘Active Communities’ Programme. This investment includes the employment of 100 full-time coaches whose target is to get Northern Ireland active by delivering over 1million coaching hours per annum over the next five years.

The launch of Active Communities was part of a SNI Investment Conference which was attended by 200 delegates from the sports sector.

Opening the conference SNI Chair Dominic Walsh commented: “The Active Communities Programme is an ambitious programme and is part of a wider investment plan by SNI which is the reason we are here today. With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London only four years away, the need for joined-up planning and inclusive partnership working has never been greater.”

SNI Chief Executive Eamonn McCartan added, “To complement the Active Communities Programme SNI will be investing £15m in high performance sport through the Governing Bodies of Sport over the next four years. This will enable them to put in place the right systems to support our talented young people and help them achieve success at the highest level. We are delighted to have our Beijing medallists Paddy, Jason and Michael, and Tyrone Gaelic Footballers Joe McMahon and Ryan Mellon with us today, they are proof of the talent Northern Ireland has.”
