Science Support
The
term sports science covers the following areas:
physiology
performance analysis
nutrition
psychology
biomechanics
strength and conditioning.
There is debate being currently held as to whether strength and conditioning is more closely linked to coaching than to sports science.
Sport NI is working with partners in the area of sports science to:
- develop greater understanding and awareness amongst governing bodies and athletes of the value that sports science can bring to improving athlete performance.
- raise the profile of sports science in order to encourage more people to consider one of the disciplines as a career option.
- support the continuous professional development of sport scientists in Northern Ireland.
The Northern Ireland Sports Science and Sports Medicine Working Group is representative of the key agencies in these areas and meets on a bi-monthly basis.
Over the next three years some of its key actions in the area of sports science are:
- Agree and document standards for quality assurance and employee competencies across all SSSM disciplines.
- Promote good practice in sports science provision to developing performance athletes taking cognisance of developments in UK, Ireland and beyond.
- Through a partnership approach by a range of agencies ensure the employment of two to three additional sports science practitioners in high performance settings to work full-time in the delivery of services to development athletes, in line with identified Governing Body needs.
- The development and roll-out of a bursary programme over three years aimed at recruiting and equipping the next generation of practitioners with the skills and competencies to work within High Performance Sport in Northern Ireland.
- Increase the knowledge base of Governing Body lead personnel of the benefits of sports science services available to their sport through a series of seminars and individual meetings, using case studies.
