Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that enables a person to value and participate in physical activity throughout life.

The All-Island Physical Literacy Consensus Statement launched in October 2022, aims to promote a culture of lifelong participation in physical activity and sport for all. Read more about the launch of the Consensus Statement here.

Sport NI’s and Sport Ireland’s creation of an all-island definition marks a historic achievement off being the third country in the world and first in Europe, to develop a national Consensus Statement for physical literacy.

Physical Literacy Module

Sport NI and Sport Ireland have developed a 3hr Understanding Physical Literacy Module which will enable participants to:

1. Understand the definition, elements, relationship between the elements and importance of physical literacy.

2. Explain whether individuals can be described as ‘physically literate’ and whether physical literacy can be assessed.

3. Describe how and where physical literacy can be developed and by whom.
