The Facilities Unit at Sport Northern Ireland is responsible for two primary work areas:
1. Facility development, design, advocacy and advice
The Facilities Unit is responsible for the promotion of strategic approach to facility planning and development in Northern Ireland. The Facilities Team also manages Northern Ireland’s sports facilities database and ‘Active Places NI’, an interactive web-based resource.
An advocacy service also provides technical and design guidance to key sports facility providers, design professionals and Sport Northern Ireland’s capital programmes. The advocacy service also includes a GIS function that enables Sport Northern Ireland to map sports facilities in relation to population and demographic data.
2. Overseeing and monitoring the implementation of the Safety of Sports Grounds (NI) Order 2006.
Sport Northern Ireland is responsible for discharging overseeing functions in relation to safety at sports grounds in Northern Ireland. These functions comprise offering advice and guidance to interested parties on sports grounds safety matters, and monitoring the implementation of the safe sports grounds safety certification scheme established under the Safety of Sports Grounds (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. Sport Northern Ireland can also offer practical, operational advice to stakeholders on other complementary legislation, e.g. Part 4 of the Justice Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.
