“Billy Bingham will be remembered as one of NI’s true sporting heroes and an inspiration to us all.

“Northern Ireland has been to three World Cups, and Billy Bingham played an integral role on each occasion, as a player in 1958, and then as manager leading his team to two consecutive World Cups in 1982 and 1986. The Bingham era was a golden age of Northern Irish football, and his achievements form a lasting legacy in our local sporting landscape.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the wider football community at this difficult time.”
