From 22nd to 30th March 2025, Sport NI and Sport Ireland teamed up to host Understanding Physical Literacy Week. This initiative aimed to promote the Understanding Physical Literacy (UPL) workshop and disseminate key physical literacy messages across the Island of Ireland.
Throughout the week, eight UPL workshops were delivered across Northern Ireland by various organisations, including governing bodies, leisure providers, health trusts, and community groups. These workshops provided participants, such as teachers, coaches, and instructors, with insights into the importance of physical literacy and strategies to promote lifelong engagement in physical activity.
Physical literacy is more than just movement skills; it encompasses the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding that enable individuals to value and participate in physical activity throughout their lives. It serves as the foundation for lifelong physical activity, promoting well-being and helping to prevent disease. By enhancing physical literacy, individuals gain the tools to lead more active and fulfilling lives.
The UPL workshop provides a comprehensive understanding of physical literacy, emphasising its role in fostering lifelong participation in physical activity. Participants learn to coach and teach using physical literacy principles, empowering them to promote active lifestyles within their communities.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of Sport NI, Sport Ireland, and our partners to enhancing physical literacy and fostering active lifestyles across the Island of Ireland.
Sport NI’s dedication to promoting physical literacy is reflected in the All-Island Physical Literacy Consensus Statement (AIPLCS), which defines physical literacy as:
“The motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding that enables a person to value and participant in physical activity throughout life.”
