Double Paris 2024 Olympic Medalist Daniel Wiffen has donated £25,000, from the Olympic Medallist Fund, to St Patricks Grammar School in Armagh.
The Olympic Medallist Fund, distributed by Sport NI and made possible thanks to funding from the Department for Communities, was split between the medallists with £20,000 for a gold medal, £10,000 for silver and £5,000 for bronze with the funding used for new equipment to expand opportunities to participate in sport.
Wiffen, who won 1500m freestyle gold and 800m freestyle bronze, qualified for the highest amount out of the Olympic medallists from Paris and used his success to help his former school finish their fitness suite with treadmills, rowing machines and weights.
The swimmer met pupils who have benefited from the investment along with Sport NI Interim Director of Sport Rebecca Hope and Principal Dominic Clarke.
Six Northern Ireland athletes representing Team Ireland and Team GB won a record breaking seven medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with four golds, one silver and two bronze in Swimming, Rowing and Gymnastics.
Other Olympic medallists Rhys McClenaghan (Origin Gymnastics), Hannah Scott (Bann Rowing Club), Jack McMillan (Bangor Swimming Club), Rebecca Shorten (Methodist College Belfast Rowing Club) and Philip Doyle (Belfast Boat Club) have each selected a club or organisation to benefit from a share of the fund.
