Local Gymnastics Club, Flight Gymnastics Academy CIC, Newtownabbey have enjoyed success at the recent British Gymnastics Northern Ireland 2019 Awards! Affiliated to British Gymnastics, Flight was established in 2011.  Originally based in Edmund Rice College the club was awarded funding from Sport NI, DAERA and Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council to open a full-time, dedicated facility for gymnastics in Glengormley.  In March 2018 the club moved into its new home at Ballycraigy Business Park where it has now grown to over 700 members. The club provides both Recreational and Competitive opportunities specialising in Acrobatic Gymnastics and Trampoline with gymnasts regularly competing at Regional, National and on the World stage in International competitions.

British Gymnastics and Gymnastics Northern Ireland celebrated the 2019 Northern Ireland Awards at the Titanic Hotel on Saturday 23rd February 2019. Hosted by Claire McCollum, with special guest Double Olympian; Becky Downie, the annual event recognised and rewarded the hard work of clubs and gymnasts across the Country.  With extremely competitive categories across Northern Ireland clubs, coach, volunteer and gymnast awards, the independent judging panel decided that Flight Gymnastics was deserving of the following awards:

  • Performance Pathway Coach of the Year – Simon Flannery
  • Club of the Year – Flight Gymnastics Academy C.I.C
  • Trampoline Gymnast of the Year – Ryan Devine and coach Simon Flannery

This year, Gymnastics NI introduced new awards for gymnasts, coaches and judges representing Northern Ireland at the highest level; Commonwealth’s, European’s, World’s and/or Olympics, alongside the established Gymnast of the Year Awards. Well done to all the recipients:

  • Master Gymnast: Ryan Devine
  • Master Coach: Simon Flannery
