Breda Dick has been a force in the world of basketball, from playing at the highest levels in Dublin to representing internationally until she was 28, her passion for the game has never wavered. But when her playing days ended, she found a new love…coaching.

Breda said: ”Once I started coaching, I couldn’t believe how much enjoyment I got from it. To be honest, I love it just as much as playing,”

Her dedication to the sport led to the creation of a thriving basketball club. What started with Breda coaching just two or three teams has grown into a community-driven club with parents stepping up as coaches and volunteers. Breda focuses on ensuring the right people are mentoring young players, passing on both basketball skills and essential life lessons.

Debbie Byrne, a club representative, describes her as a “visionary and an inspiration” who brings people together with a shared purpose: to help young athletes grow, not just in sport, but in confidence, friendships, and life.

For Breda, coaching is about giving back to a sport that has given her so much. “I hope to inspire young players in our club to give back as well and I really do see that happening,” she said.

Being recognised as a #SportMaker is an honour she never expected, but it’s a testament to the countless lives she has touched through her passion, leadership, and commitment to the game.
