Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has taken to the water to launch a new campaign to encourage people to ‘Move More, Live Better’.

Speaking after a kayaking session at Erne Paddlers Club in Enniskillen, Minister Lyons said: “Taking the first steps to get active can sometimes feel daunting, but it doesn’t need to be.

“We have developed new resources with our partners as part of our new Move More, Live Better campaign to make it easier for everyone to find a form of exercise that works for them, whether that’s a walk with a neighbour, exploring one of our beautiful historic monuments, a swim in the sea or joining a local sports club.

“Being active helps us feel better, make new friends and build stronger communities. I encourage everyone to take that first step and see where it leads. Let’s Move More, Live Better together.”

The online resources of Move More, Live Better are designed to inspire the public, particularly those who are less active, to explore opportunities to move more, in ways that suit them, and to take steps to become more physically active.

The Minister also enjoyed a walk at the National Trust’s Castle Coole estate followed by Tully Castle, one of the Department’s State Care Monuments.

The Minister added: “We have so many fantastic outdoor spaces right across Northern Ireland which offer opportunities for activities like walking, cycling, jogging or whatever works for you. Check out the Move More, Live Better online resource to find somewhere near you.”

Richard Archibald, Sport NI Interim CEO, said: “Sport is for everyone and the Move More, Live Better campaign will help you find the physical activity that suits you best.

“Getting active has huge benefits for both our mental and physical health and there are so many different activities to try right on our doorsteps. At Sport NI we believe there is a place for everyone in sport, regardless of age or ability.

“We hope this campaign inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, whether that’s getting up and going out for that walk, joining a local sports club or getting back on your bike for the first time in years. When we move more, we feel better.”

Chloe Hamilton, Erne Paddlers coach, said: “Erne Paddlers is pleased to support the Move More, Live Better campaign. The club is about making paddlesport open and welcoming to everyone.

“We run sessions for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities – from complete beginners to seasoned paddlers.

“Our inclusive programmes mean that people living with disabilities or health conditions, or those who’ve simply never had the chance to try paddling before, can get out on the water in a safe, supportive and fun way. Whether it’s a gentle trip to enjoy the scenery, learning new skills, or taking on a personal challenge, we believe paddlesport can build confidence, friendships and a real sense of wellbeing. At the heart of it all is our simple aim – better lives through paddlesport.”
