A chat between two men at a climbing event with their instructor has led to a training course that has dramatically improved the mental health of a number of local men thanks to funding from the National Lottery.

It was in the summer of 2026 while delivering a Mountaineering Ireland climbing session, instructor Richard Franklyn met two participants who told him about the positive impact climbing made to their lives. As a result, Mountaineering Ireland and the Outdoor Partnership Northern Ireland piloted a new programme for men experiencing physical or mental health challenges.

Funded through Sport NI’s System Partner Investment, the programme demonstrates the power of climbing to improve wellbeing, reduce social isolation and help create a sense of purpose. Over ten training days participants progressed from introductory climbing to lead climbing, multi pitch training and preparation for Rock Climbing Instructor training.

Ten men participated, and they have not looked back, several have joined clubs and climb regularly as a result. Participants continue to organise weekly climbing sessions and two are working towards Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications.

The personal development and new social connections the participants gained have proved invaluable.

Course participant Adam Dunlop said: “The progression was about much more than climbing grades. It was about rebuilding confidence, developing competence, taking responsibility, overcoming challenges and reconnecting with the camaraderie and sense of purpose that comes from working as a team. Each day gave me another opportunity to push myself, learn something new and see tangible progress.

“A massive thank you to Mountaineering Ireland for organizing and to Richard Franklyn, Adventure Climbing Company and the whole team for creating such a supportive environment and giving us the opportunity to develop through genuine adventure and challenge. I’m looking forward to building on that progression and seeing what next year brings.”

The welcoming environment for the climbing participants has opened up a whole new positive network for those taking part.

This investment is made possible by National Lottery Funding. Thanks to National Lottery players, over £33 million is raised every week for good causes.
