Sport NI Interim CEO Richard Archibald welcomed the confirmation that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“The uncertainty surrounding the venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been a significant concern, and today’s news is very welcome. Birmingham was Northern Ireland’s most successful games in terms of medals, and in the wake of our most successful ever Olympics in Paris, we are keen that Northern Ireland maintains this momentum.

“In these circumstances we recognise that it will be a different Games, but it is right that we thank Glasgow for stepping in to ensure athletes can enjoy competing at one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.

“Through our partnership with Commonwealth Games NI, we know preparations were well underway in anticipation of a host city being secured. No doubt our athletes will relish an almost home advantage with the venue now so close for family and friends to cheer them on as they compete for Team NI.”
