Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA has appointed Stephen Reid as the Vice Chair of the Sport NI Board from 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2029.

Stephen joined the Sport NI Board in June 2024 following his retirement as Chief Executive of Ards and North Down Borough Council and after 39 years of public service in local government. He is a graduate in Physical Education from Loughborough University, holds an MBA and is a Chartered Director.

Stephen Reid commented: “I am privileged to take up the role of Vice Chair of Sport NI and work with colleagues on the Board and the Sport NI team to support our also recently appointed Chair, Gavin Boyd.

“I have had a long relationship with a wide range of sports in terms of playing, refereeing and administration and in particular rugby, where I represented Ireland at Under 18, Ulster at Under 23 level and played for Collegians and Belfast Harlequins Clubs. I am passionate about the positive benefits that sport and physical activity can bring and look forward to maximising the power of sport to change lives.”

Welcoming the news Sport NI Interim CEO Richard Archibald said: “I’d like to congratulate Stephen on his new role as Vice-Chair of Sport NI.

“Stephen brings a wealth of experience to our Board and now into the role as Vice Chair from experiences both on and off the pitch. I look forward to continuing our work across the sporting sector to maintain and increase participation in sport and physical activity.”
