Katie Morrow was straight back onto the court this morning in a 5-8th Playoff match against Japan.
Morrow from Ballyclare helped ParalympicsGB secure a 67-55 win and now face Germany in the 5- 6th playoff match on Saturday at 6:15pm.
Claire Taggart and Katie Morrow both suffered quarter final defeats at the Paralympic Games.
Taggart and the BC1/2 Boccia Mixed Team suffered a narrow defeat to Indonesia on a tie break. After being behind, the ParalympicsGB team fought back to go ahead 7-5 with one end remaining. Indonesia levelled the scores at 7-7 and won 3-0 on the tiebreak to advance to the semi finals.
Katie Morrow and the ParalympicsGB Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team lost to USA. Morrow was an unused sub as GB lost 59-52 to end their Paralympic Game medal hopes.
Paralympic Ireland swimmers Barry McClements and Dearbhaile Brady started Day Six by both reaching the finals of their respective categories.
McClements finished fourth in his S9 100m Backstroke heat with Brady also just outside the top three in the S6 50m Butterfly to be in the top eight to reach the finals.
Brady put in an outstanding performance in the final as she finished 5th and narrowly missed out on a bronze by 0.16 of a second. McClements finished eighth in his final and will compete again on Friday in the S9 100m Butterfly.
Belfast born Jessica McKenna made her Paralympic Games debut in Para Dressage for Paralympics Ireland. McKenna and her horse Davidoff 188 scored 65.033% which placed them 7th after their ride but ultimately finished 10th. McKenna just misses out on qualifying for the individual freestyle event with the top eight getting the chance to compete once again.
Claire Taggart was back in Boccia action as part of the BC1/2 Mixed Team event with matches against China and Portugal. First up was China with the GB team suffering a 13-1 defeat but recovered to beat Portugal 5-4 to earn a spot in the Quarter Finals.
Deaten Registe kicked off Day Five by earning a spot in the SB14 100m Breaststroke final by finishing fourth in his heat qualifying as one of the eight fastest swimmers across the two heats. He finished sixth in the final and swam a personal best. A brilliant debut Paralympics for the Dungannon swimmer.
In the Para Triathlon PTVI, Chloe and Judith MacCombe, from Claudy, finished 6th and 8th respectively with guides Catherine Sands and Eimear Nicholls. The Tandem Twins cycled and ran well but a slower start than others in the swim meant they had too much time to catch up on.
And David Ross finished his Wheelchair Rugby campaign with ParalympicsGB with defeat in the bronze medal match against Australia. Ross was an unused sub as they lost 50-48.
It was a tough day for our NI athletes beginning with Claire Taggart who missed out on a Paralympic medal with defeat in the semi final and then bronze medal match.
Claire lost 3-2 after leading in the semi final and then suffered a 5-2 defeat in the bronze medal match to enda heartbreaking day for the Larne athlete. Taggart though has the chance to bounce back in the team competition which starts on Tuesday.
Also, Paralympics GB Wheelchair Rugby player David Ross lost in the semi finals to move into the bronze medal match against Australia.
And Katie Morrow and her GB Wheelchair Basketball team lost to Canada in their final Pool match but move into the QFs on Wednesday.
Claire Taggart booked her place in the semi-finals of the women’s BC2 individual Boccia for Team GB with a 3-2 victory over Yeung of China. Claire takes on Korea’s Soyeong Joeng at 10.55am tomorrow.
David Ross and ParalympicsGB Wheelchair Rugby took on the hosts France in a tightly contested match, winning 50-49 as they continue their quest for a medal.
Katie Morrow and ParalympicsGB lost 54 – 63 to Canada in the women’s wheelchair basketball group game.
David Ross and ParalympicsGB kept their 100% record in the Wheelchair Rugby going with a 55-53 win against Denmark. They face France on Saturday at 6:30pm in their final Group B fixture.
Claire Taggart secured a Quarter Final spot but lost her final Pool A match against Cristina Goncalves. Taggart went down 4-3 but with the Top Two advancing to the last eight, Taggart now faces Hiu Lam Yeung of Hong Kong. Victory would secure a semi final place and the opportunity to play for a Paralympic medal.
Paralympic Ireland swimmer Dearbhalie Brady was the first NI athlete to compete at the Paralympic Games in the S6 50m Freestyle Heats. The Feeny Athlete is the youngest member of the Paralympic Ireland squad and finished 5th in her heat. Brady finished 10th overall, just 0.5 seconds away from a spot in the final but swam a personal best.
In action this morning for Paralympics GB was David Ross in Wheelchair Rugby and Katie Morrow in Wheelchair Basketball. Ross was an unused substitute as GB beat Australia 58-55 and Morrow came on as a late sub as they beat Spain 69-34.
This evening saw ParalympicsGB Boccia player Claire Taggart get her quest underway for a Paralympic medal as she defeated Joselyn Leon from Ecuador 10-1 in her opening Pool A match.
