Overview

Sheffield Hallam University would like to inform you about research taking place on behalf of UK Sport and the Home Country Sports Councils (Sport England, Sportscotland, Sport Wales and Sport NI) to investigate the inclusion landscape within the talent and performance pathways. This will involve gathering data that National governing bodies already hold regarding characteristics of their members. This includes, where available, gender, ethnicity, age, nationality, education, gender identity, sexuality, first language, religion and postcode.

No action is required at this point and these communications are to inform you that we will be making contact with your NGB in January 2021 to begin data collection.

The University undertakes research as part of its function for the community under its legal status. Data protection allows us to use personal data for research with appropriate safeguards in place under the legal basis of public tasks that are in the public interest. A full statement of your rights can be found at here. However, all University research is reviewed to ensure that participants are treated appropriately, and their rights respected.

All data from the study will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence and will not include collection of data relating to name or membership numbers which could be used to identify individuals. All data will be combined with those of many others and summarized in a report to further protect anonymity. UK Sport and the Home Country Sport Councils will receive regular reports detailing the results of the data collection, these are fully anonymised, and no individual will be identifiable.

Data Collection will take place between January 2021 and July 2021. Data will be kept by Sheffield Hallam University for a period of five years after the completion of the project before being destroyed.

If you haven’t done so already when your membership data was collected, we require that you advise your members that their data is going to be used for the purposes of research.

If you would like any further information, please see the FAQ page, or please get in contact with Tim Vernon (details below).
