Sport Matters: The Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation 2009-2019 acknowledges that no one single individual or organisation can deliver the vision of the Strategy and that a genuine partnership approach to implementation is essential. It is on this basis that the three Sport Matters Implementation Groups (SMIGs) were established.

Since October 2010, the primary role of each SMIGs has been to engage key partners and stakeholders in a process that will support the attainment of key steps and targets by encouraging ownership, trust and confidence.

With the support of Sport Northern Ireland, each SMIG is tasked with:

  • Creating, publishing and advocating detailed action plans
  • Underpinning and supporting their detailed action plans with a programme of research
  • Gaining commitment to implementation of the Strategy
  • Securing resources over the life course of the Strategy
  • Monitoring and reporting on achievements of each stakeholder with the SMIGs
