BrendanBrendan Irvine will carry the flag for Team Ireland at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Tokyo on Friday.

For the first time in Olympic history, all 205 countries will have a male and female flag-bearer.

Brendan becomes the fourth Belfast-born boxer to carry the Team Ireland flag at an Olympic opening ceremony after Jim McCourt (1968), Wayne McCullough (1988) and Paddy Barnes (2016).

Brendan said: “Absolutely honoured & delighted to be named flag-bearer for my great country something I will be forever proud off! Not only is this a special moment but to also create history doing so with the first male and female is unbelievable! Now let the games begin!”

Brendan, now entering his second Olympic Games in Tokyo, having competed at Rio 2016 will captain the seven-strong Irish boxing squad. He secured a spot for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo through his performance in the flyweight category at the 2020 Olympic Qualification Tournament in London, England.
