Basketball NI has scored a three pointer with their latest initiative ‘She Got Game’ which has seen an increase in female participation in the sport.

She Got Game is aimed at promoting inclusivity and fostering a sense of community amongst women through basketball.

The programme has been supported through the Sport NI Sports System Investment thanks to funding from The National Lottery.

She Got Game was setup as a social initiative to get women onto the basketball court without the pressure of a formal league which can be a barrier to participation due to the commitment required whilst leading a busy life.

The programme came to its conclusion in this recent block of sessions with a blitz where over 50 women from Belfast Bulls, Magherafelt Titans and Newry Fliers took part at Olympia Leisure Centre.

Niamh Mac Manus, Programme Coordinator for Basketball NI, said: “The programme encourages Women to prioritise their own health and wellness.

“A lot of these women are mothers, have busy careers, so they don’t have the time to commit to league basketball but coming out for once a week clears their heads, they get to make friends and play basketball.”

Two players taking to the court at the Olympia Leisure Centre were Enya Henry of Magherafelt Titans and Helen Cranney of Newry Fliers.

Both are back on the court thanks to She Got Game. Enya said: “I think it’s great to get girls out socially but also giving them the opportunity to represent the club and have team morale. There are girls who were so nervous about tonight but have come off really enjoying it so let’s hope they keep on going.”

Helen added: “We need more young girls in Northern Ireland coming along to play basketball. So, if we can get onto the court and make a show of ourselves or celebrate being women playing basketball hopefully that will encourage more young girls to come.”
